When I was in the last class of my high school I was so happy that I got a high score that can let me join the  medical college. My parents were so proud of my high score, then when the day that all of the high school students well know about the college that they will study in I was so scared about that because I only register for three colleges that are in my country and the rest 40 were in different countries. A week before this day, my mom was so tired, she had a heart disease and she was in the hospital for two weeks , when I know that I will study in United States of America, I was so sad and I cried every night because how can I leave my mom alone and she was in a bad situation with her heart. Then I tried to contact the ministry of higher education about my situation and they said that there is a chance to study in a college of dentistry I agree with this without any thoughts just because I want to take care of my mom. After I joined the college of dentistry, the students were so kind and they help me to follow what I miss during the semester. After three or four days, I got an email from the ministry that I can not complete my study because I was in an engineer major then I switch it to dentistry. It was a really bad week then I my family said that they will be with my mom to take care of her and I need to go to study the engineering major in USA. When I came to Dayton and when I saw how the people are super kind with me and how the students are so important to the teachers I feel so happy. To end with, we need to be patience with everything and we need to know that every problem or every bad situation will come the happiest days or solution after it.

the semester goes pretty well. there are many assignments that I put all my effort on them, but some of them went quiet easy and I learned a lot from them. first, I really like the video about spotlight and how they want to clarify how the priests sexually abusing children and how this is a serious problem. I really love how they were so careful about the information they search and how they want to protect the children. before I watched the video I did not know about this serious problem and I was shocked when I heard that. another favorite assignment is the third writing in English 100. In my writing, I compared between the Coca Cola advertisement in United States of America and China. I learned that any global company want to reach their audience and consumers by using some techniques or strategies to create a creative advertisements. they create an advertisement that meant for the customers by adding something related to their region, culture, and believes. I liked how the Coca Cola ads  took the culture colors into their consideration since there are many unlucky colors in different countries. also, the Coca Cola ads in the United States of America tries to reach customers by their emotions and how it show the individual and independence life in the country. I really like how the companies know how to target their consumers and how they took every thing into their consideration. I think the advertisements are not just to persuade the audience to buy something, but also to let them know how they are important and to learn something new about other countries that have different cultures, regions, and believes.

in English 100 class at University of Dayton I learned how to connect the lecture into my homework. we did learn about several things around the community the problems that the community has how we explain things to others and how to make a great argument. after each lecture we write around 4-6 pages related to those topics. I want to learn more about this system. I want to write about topics that has some statistics and how I paraphrase sentences. furthermore, how to write a strong thesis statement and how to restate the conclusion. I want to know how to read very fast, but with understanding the information very well because I will take some tough classes that based on reading and have a lot of information that need to be memorize very well. I want to learn how to take good notes during the lectures. also, I want to learn how to speak fluency without mistakes, and how to stand in front of the class and present effectively. I want to know what are the process to be a great student that know how to read, write, present. I want to know all of that because I am a college students and all of that will help me to be effective during my studies and my life as well. I am glad that I have to take the English 200, so I think I will choose the class with the same teacher. I learned a lot from my teacher this semester especially if the teacher is kind and helpful, the students will love the class and will give all of their effort to that class to get a great grades.

 I am writing to tell you my wonderful  experience as part of German language discourse community. When I was in high school, I studied the best subject ever. I studied German language and it was the best experience I have ever had. At the beginning, my teacher said that learning a new language can improve our skills, and provide many job opportunities. The main goal in this subject or this class is to learn the basic level effectively, so we can complete all the levels smoothly and easily. My teacher was hard working to help us and teach us this subject so we can collect all the information and use them in different ways. We communicate with others in class using German language as much as we can, so we can practice the speaking skill. Also, we learned German language by playing different type of games. We wrote a lot to practice the writing skill and to use the vocabulary words and their own articles. Furthermore, we use many application that help us improving our learning and be effective in it, so we can got some feedback from these application or websites. Moreover, when we wrote some paragraphs or essays, our teacher gave us some feedback that can help us to correct our mistakes or hot to improve our writing skill. I use YouTube to help me how to use the grammar effectively and how to pronounce the new words very well, so I can be like the native speakers. It was great 2 years because I learned the third language which improved my knowledge and skills.

In fall break, my friends and I decided to go to Smoky Mountain. we started to search some good hotels that have great services such as, delicious breakfast, gym, kind stuff and clean room with clean bathroom. After that, we decided to think about the snacks that we need to take them with us during the trip because it is a 5 hours road trip from Dayton. Then, we cleaned our apartment so when we return back we will find every thing cleaned and organized. The next early morning, we put our bags, snacks and all the stuff inside the car and started our road trip. when we arrived there, we went to the hotel to take a nap and be ready for the activities. we went to smoky mountain alpine coaster, the needle, carting, horse riding, helicopter and wonder works. we saw our Omani friends there which was surprising. the wonderful part is when we went to the horror house at night. it was AMAZING!!! I really enjoyed it because my friends were scared and I was laughing at them. also, when I saw the children there in the horror house crying, I laughed so bad, but I don’t know why the parents take their children there. the worst thing is when I my friends talked a lot and make a lot of noise, I didn’t pay any attention to the road when I am driving, so we had a tiny accident which make them so QUIET for the rest of the trip 🙂 . We had fun in Smoky Mountain and we want to go to another places for new adventures and new activities.

after watching the video, I was shocked because I didn’t think that the priests would do this sexual thing to the youth. I really like the film and how the newspaper’s tries to get the information to tell the story and help the people or protect them. they were so careful about the information they search and they spent a year or even more to cover the child abuse, because they don’t want to oppress any one. it is painful to watch this film, but I really recommend others to watch and know about this serious problem. the root problem is when the people lie to the church or even to themselves about their abstinence from sex, which will let the priests continue doing this thing more and more because there is no one will talk about what they did. I am happy that this problem have been solved and there is a clean environment for children. also, I am happy that many victims have been helped. after I read the article about spotlight, I have known that the society are caution about the care of the children or youth. the solution for this serious problem is that the priests or the volunteers will not be alone with the child or any youth alone and will not sleep with them at all. even if they are in the car for example they must not e alone. there are may be 90 priests who did this sexual thing to the youth or the children in Boston, which means that this is a really serious problem that need to be solved rapidly.

When I read about the literacy narrative I have learned how to write a well told story. I want to write a story that makes the audience’s  interests by adding the vivid details such as, textures or smells. Also, I learned some steps to write a well told story. For example, I ask my self some questions such as, what is my topic? , what is the reason of my writing?, and who are my reader or my audience?. I am jubilant that I learned all of this steps because in my college I need to write like this kind of writing, I need to describe the events or the places. Furthermore, I have known about a new program for recording the voice and how to add some effects. the most favorite part when I add the music, it was amazing and it made it more interesting. My least favorite part of the first unit is when I finished writing my story and I need to record my voice. when I read the words in a wrong way I deleted the record and started to record my voice again and again for several times. Any way, it was an unexpected experience that is made me realize how I like writing in a literacy narrative perspective. recalling the scenes from my memory made me remember the events that I was about to forget. if you were in my place, I would advice you to try and enjoy this type of writing because I did !!

Entering a new life can be a little bit hard. when I was in high school, my life was easier than now. I was with my family, my dad dropped me off to school every day, so I don’t need to go by bus or taxi. when I finish my classes I found my lunch ready, it was delicious. I don’t have to buy groceries. I was not responsible to anything. my mind was empty, nothing to think about except my studying.  My classes were so fun because I studied with my friends. My subjects were in Arabic which is my mother language that makes me feel better when I study my subjects.

When I finished my high school, I got the chance to study in the United States. I was excited to have a new life and a new journey. I came on January. the people in
Dayton are very kind and helpful. the students in University of Dayton are so important, the teachers want their students to be perfect to graduate from the university when they have enough knowledge and experiences. living in the U.S might be expensive. Now I should take care of myself, my studying, and my apartments. Whenever I want to go to the college I need to by bus or Uber, I don’t have a car which is hard to live here without a car. My classes are great , but I hate the classes that let me read and read and read.
I have some classes with zero credit, they take lots of my time, so I don’t have enough time to study and memorize the information. I need to learn how to manage my time very well.

Before seven months, my writing process was really bad. I don’t think that I have a process for writing. I wrote whatever comes to my brain at that time without paying attention to the grammar, punctuation, transitions…etc.

when I joined the Intensive English Program, I started to learn the process and I did my best to improve my writing because I really need to write very well when I study for my Bachelor degree.  everyone has his or her own process, so I will share my own process that I learned from the Intensive English Program.

Before writing, I usually brainstorm my ideas or I use the free writing method, so I try to write all the ideas that come into my brain. Then, I order the ideas and choose which one will go first or which one will form my writing.

when I have my plan, I choose the best location and time to start writing. I don’t pay attention to grammar or word count because I will revise my writing again. I just write all my ideas in order beginning from the introduction with thesis statement ending to the conclusion where I summarize my writing and restate my thesis using different words.

Finally, I revise my writing by adding some extra words or changing my words to make them academic or stronger. Also, I ask myself if I wrote all the information that I want the reader to know. I usually let my friend to read what I wrote to give me a feedback. then, I pay attention to the grammar mistakes, transition words, punctuation, spelling…etc. Also, I go to the tutoring or the writing center to check my writing and also give a feed back if I need to add or delete something to improve my writing or essay.

in my opinion, those methods or processes are very helpful because my grades increase in writing/grammar class in the Intensive English Program, it was from B to A. also, my teacher told me if I continue using those methods in my writing I will be perfect in writing and my skills will improve.

My name is Maryam. I am from Muscat which is the capital city of Oman.

during my last two years in high school, I studied German language which was

the easiest class and I got the diploma certificate. I studied the English program in

IEP for six months and I met new friends with different backgrounds. Now I am a

freshman Civil Engineering student and I am so excited. I am very bad in managing

my time so I need to know the organization skills and time management. My

passion is playing piano. I play by ears 😎 what I mean is that I listen to the music

that I love and I try to play it on piano. I traveled to many countries such as, Canada

, Germany and some of the gulf countries. I am part of the Muslim Omani

community in Dayton and we are all together united. we meet each other regularly

and we celebrate the traditional and religious holidays by cooking some traditional

food and wearing new traditional clothes. I get very excited when  we celebrate our

national day in the university because people will know more about Oman and its

history. I am so happy to be here in Dayton. people are very helpful and kind. I

enjoy every moment and I try to take a picture of the happy moments and save

them or print them just to remember those days.
